About

Suzanne Gauthier is a contemporary painter and mixed media artist based in Toronto, Canada.

Working with coloured pencil and mixed media drawings on paper, and oil paintings on panel, she creates representational works examining ordinary objects and photographs, and the significance and personal meaning that they accumulate.

Gauthier's current drawing and painting practice starts with objects and photographs from her own life, and also from family and friends. She explores the ways in which these everyday things become associated with memory and personal meaning. Her work attempts to capture not only a visual representation of these items, but also to represent in some way the feelings that have become connected to it.

Through carefully rendered compositions, she invites viewers to reconsider commonplace objects as sources of personal and collective stories.

Background

Gauthier trained at Sheridan and the Ontario College of Art and Design before working as a designer and illustrator in educational and magazine publishing. She later spent many years in the community recreation field while continuing her art practice.
